August 2012 NEWS
Thank you to our Uganda Sister City Donors!!!We've raised $3,150 so far
Thanks to generous gifts from 12 donors, including two gifts of $1000 each ($1,900 more still needed for all 6 delegates to come)
When the leaders of a nation decide to change their nation, they can!
Uganda is still one of the poorest countries in Africa. But even so, a look at the Kasese District government webpage shows their relentless hope for their own future...
"Kasese District's vision: To have a poverty free society by 2025."
"Kasese District mission: To achieve sustainable socio-economic development through efficient provision of quality services to the people in conformity with national and local priorities."
...and here's an article from World AIDS day news 2012...
"Back in the 1980s more than 30% of Ugandans had contracted the HIV virus. Now the national prevalence rate is around 6.4%, an achievement attributed largely to the country's rapid acknowledgment of the crisis it faced, the roll out of national prevention and treatment messages and its embrace of open discourse around causes and solutions to the virus.

Kasese "Friendship City" Delegation coming August 2012!
by Peggy Pollard, April 18, 2012
The City of Kasese, Uganda is now planning a delegation of, hopefully, five representatives to visit their "Friendship City" of Santa Cruz. The visit is to begin a long-term program of cultural exchange and friendships between many groups in the cities. The delegation will consist of the Mayor of Kasese, ISI alumni Godfrey Kasozi, and 3 other government and city representatives.
The "Friendship City" status is a two-year trial phase in the process of forming a Sister City relation between the two cities.
A small Santa Cruz group "Friends of Kasese" and the Santa Cruz Sister City Kasese subcommittee is meeting monthly to plan for the delegation and develop relations between the two cities. Please join us!(2nd Wednesday each month, 6:30 p.m. at Peggy's home)
We are looking for host homes for each of the delegates while they are here (exact dates to be announced) and opportunities for delegates to meet with cultural or interest groups in Santa Cruz area.
Delegations are historically expected to fund their own travel expenses, but because funds are very limited in Kasese, ISI is asking for donations for their travel expenses here (approximately $2,000 per delegate) and for costs of hosting the delegation.
A fundraiser RUMMAGE SALE will be Saturday June 2 by "Friends of Kasese" at the home of Peggy Pollard. Donated items can be dropped off Thursday or Friday at the Pollard home, 128 Monterey St..
Volunteers needed to staff the Rummage sale 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. signup with Peggy!
MONEY DONATIONS for the delegation:
(notify Peggy of your donation so we can ensure it is used appropriately!)

Ugandan ISI alumni impacts Santa Cruz City government
by Peggy Pollard, Feb 15, 2012
"I swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States..."
I was very honored to take an oath of office last month after being appointed on the Santa Cruz Sister Cities Committee to support the proposed Sister City relationship with Kasese, Uganda. This was a result of 12 years of networking efforts by ISI alumni Godfrey Kasozi, and answer to many prayers by the people of Kasese.
In my interview with Santa Cruz City Council I explained that, as ISI staff, I had already been welcoming international leaders to our fair city for 20 years.
I am also collaborating with other local groups supporting Godfrey's networking for Kasese, the result of ISI Santa Cruz alumni, Godfrey Kasozi, from Kasese. He has been networking with many groups here in Santa Cruz area for 12 years, since his 1999 UCSC Farm internship.
Last year he applied to the City of Santa Cruz for Kasese to become a Sister City. So I'm joining the city government committee to support his efforts.
The purpose is not just fundraising, but developing a network of relations between groups for cultural and friendship exchange for mutual benefit. That's what we've been doing with international Students Inc. too. long-term friendships!
Uganda is 80% Christian. "Everyone goes to church" Godfrey says. Through a Sister City relationship the people of Kasese can have a big impact on our population of Santa Cruz through our city's leadership, as well as us helping them in many ways.
A delegation from Kasese plans to visit Santa Cruz sometime this year -- Godfrey, the Mayor of Kasese, and another Kasese official . Our committees are in initial planning for the delegation visit, and welcome ideas for groups they can visit and hosts to house them, especially the Mayor and officials.
When I was asked to join the Sister City committee, I first said no, I didn't have time. But so far it is quite exciting. Plus it could result in me going with a delgation to his city in Uganda in the future. One benefit is that the Sister City Committee has a non-profit account for fundraising, which is something Godfrey has been needing for his fundraising efforts here!

... is finishing his annual visit to Santa Cruz (travel paid for by another Santa Cruz friend)
His special requests this trip are for help purchasing a badly needed computer for his center (asked for $200 help from ISI) and to buy soccer balls for the children of his area.
He says that every Sunday about 2,000 people in his area villages gather together to watch their children play soccer, and they don't have much balls, uniforms, cleats, etc.
So Thursday July 9, my helper Yizenia and I exhaustively researched costs of purchasing or having donated such soccer equipment, and costs of shipping it separately vs. Godfrey taking it on his flight.
4 a.m. Saturday, July 10, Yizenia and I drove Godfrey to SFO for his flight back home to Uganda. We are pleased to have sent with him a new computer (from Best Buy) and a duffle bag full of new soccer balls and supplies, generously discounted by Rogue Soccer Shop.
If you would like your donation to be tax deductible, you can donate through my ISI main account #5466 and it will be added to my salary (from which I'm paying) Most of the expenses will not be reimbursed to me as ministry expenses, since the costs far exceed the amount I can claim as ministry expense.
If, however, you would like to donate directly to me in cash or check, that would be gladly accepted (but not tax deductible)
Here are the expenses:
* $200 to help pay for computer (purchased for approx.$600 from Best Buy)
* $200 excess luggage fee for flight (he's checked 6 bags, 50lbs max. weight, with seeds, and supplies for his center)
* $32.84 one Mammoth size duffle bag from Outdoor World Santa Cruz
* $407.14: new Soccer supplies, generously discounted by Rogue Soccer Shop, Santa Cruz--
--21 practice soccer balls of various colors & sizes 3,4,5 for both younger and older kids ($13 each instead of $20)
-- 2 longer-lasting High quality soccer balls for competition matches ($32 instead of $40)
--2 sets of 10-pinney-soccer uniforms ($32 instead of $100)
--2 sturdy quality air pumps to inflate the balls ($9 each instead of $11).
DONATED free by Rogue Soccer Shop, Santa Cruz:
--4 extra needles for the pumps
--2 small soccer clipboards
--1 practice soccer ball
--1 whistle
DONATED free by one of the Santa Cruz City youth girls soccer teams:
--one set of used soccer uniforms
--a few used soccer cleats.
THANK YOU for your prayers and support!
