Dear friends,
Greetings from Uganda, Kasese, I would like to thank you so much for your contribution towards floods relief that happened in Karusandara, when I requested for help.
The report delayed to come out but I now send it to you, we are working hard to make sure that Karusandara is free from floods as soon as we find money to make it a better place, thank you for providing to the community ,
We are still hosting some families at new cetrud centre , and we intend to give some families permanent homes so that they grow food and live a better life.
We are working to continue finding funds for digging trenches, for taking water out of the farmers homes and farms

July 22 Hi Peggy Thank you so much for your email . Yes it has been very busy for all of us here , at a time when we are working at flood recovery , registering our cooperative , putting up a ten acre Cetrud centre , rebuilding three big fish ponds , working on water project for the farmers , negotiating with government to accept My concept of rural small scale industrial park , to be established in Kasese
I am glad am making progress , I will make my first presentation to the minister next week , with my member of parliament
I thought I had talked about the video it came at at time when I was made the guest of honor at the naming of chimpanzee babies so I told them about the film and we did watch together little bit , as coordinator friends of the park , it was so well done thankls to all the team
But also I have lost my relatives and friends parents since I came I have now buried 5 and today will burry another old man so it is not easy also to know many people
July 13 Good morning, I have been informed by Jamada that yesterday he received $ 1321 for US dollars … so the total money got in Ug shs is 3,357,000 banked for use according to the planned for flood relief activities. Then other accountability will follow
We held our meeting yesterday and agreed on a number of issues Yes we shall work with the sister city as Cetrud funds goes through , we shall present our annual budgets to sister as it will help us not to spend more time fundraising so that it will be done by sister city then we shall need to agree with sister city the time frames of receiving funds and of reporting if it will be quarterly or annually …
Am in Karusandara we have started putting up the centre and helping farmers put back their gardens though it is so dry. Have a good one
--Godfrey
July 11 Thank you Peggy …our total fund needed for this rehabilitation project is $10000 we are raising it from 4 donors which will enable us put back the centre , and creat a seed and seedling nursery that will help families replace what they lost during floods on a sustainable manner Let us keep in touch

Dear Peggy,
Aug 23
It seems a long time since I have been in touch and an extremely long time since you were rushing us around everywhere!... A daughter of one of the men drowned in the flood (he left a very large extended family of dependents) is completing her first year of a 2 year nursing course. ... We believe that if we help her she would become a provider for the family when she finishes and is employed. Whilst the money is not enough there will be a fairly long period for the family and possibly our club to look for the remaining part. ...Hope you are all well and Rotary is thriving....Best wishes

Dear Peggy and all other Sister City members and Rotarians of Santa Cruz,
Just to let you know that I am now back on mail after a very good convention in a lovely and warm Lisbon followed by a few miserably cold days in UK (ironically UK is now so hot that people are dying)
As you are so generously talking of more transfers in future We shall be really happy to get the solution to the village water problem under way. The nurses' uniforms are a real need if you imagine them treating patients when dressed in their ordinary clothes....Best wishes to you all
Carol

That fund raiser sounds great and I wish I could be there too! Thank you for all the efforts. I am sure that your new badge cannot be far away....Greetings to all our Rotary and Sister City friends

Like Godfrey I have not fully adjusted to the strange time and yet I have so many things to try and catch up before again leaving Kasese tomorrow for Lisbon [Rotary International Convention}]. Therefore please forgive me for being very brief. It was extremely kind of Sunrise to give that money for the flood relief. ...please pass on our thanks
Carol.
June 13
We are safely back in Kampala although not yet home. We shall all write at greater length when we get there but in the meantime wish to express our thanks to all of you for the most wonderful visit. ... All the others who spared the time and ferried us, feted us and generally made us so welcome did a great job too ...convey our thanks to all the others.
...until we have assessed the needs and obviously we shall wait for Godfrey to return before using any money, especially since there is no longer an emergency response situation but rather a rebuilding whether of gardens ,fish ponds or other things. We shall certainly keep you informed.
Thanks, thanks, thanks! For all the care and love

Carol

Kasese floods: Affected population now at 25,445 The population affected by the Kasese floods now stands at 25, 445 according to Uganda Red Cross Society latest report of 8th May 2013.
URCS continues to seek sh1.8bn to assist atleast 18, 000 people. Government through the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness is coordinating the response in Kasese.
The government is assisted by partners like Kasese District authorities and Uganda Red Cross Society. The affected communities are from Bulembia division, Kilembe Sub County, Nyamwamba division, Karusandara sub county, Kitswamba Sub County, Kyabarungira sub county, Bugoye Sub County, Maliba Sub County and Kyalumba Sub County.
The most affected people are from Karusandara Sub County.
Government and Kasese District set up two temporary camps at Kasese and Bugoye primary schools.
At Kasese P.S 3, 878 people have been registered while at Bugoye Primary School there are 1, 341 people are registered. The two camps are now accommodating 5, 219. Out of the 5, 219; 25 are pregnant women; 32 are breast feeding mothers; 2, 894 are children below 12 years.
Uganda Police is helping to track water from Hima and then purify it using installed filters at Kasese Primary School camp. The communities at the camp are using available sanitary facilities i.e 10 latrine stances at Kasese P.S and 4 stances at Bugoye P.S. URCS has constructed four bath shelters at the two camps.
Hygiene promotion sensitization sessions are being conducted by Red Cross volunteers in the two camps to reduce the risks of having outbreaks of diarrhoeal diseases.
The URCS latest report indicates that the people at the two camps cannot go back to their original homes as the houses were washed away or completely destroyed. Water supply infrastructure in many villages was damaged hence there is limited access to clean drinking water.
Many toilets were damaged and this has resulted in people not being able to use toilets. 817 latrines and one sewage treatment unit were completely destroyed.
The Red Cross report identifies the most urgent humanitarian needs as essential household items, food, hygiene and sanitation awareness, water purification tablets, tracing and psychosocial services.
